Heart disease has hit my family hard…particularly with the men of my heritage. My grandpa died in his early 50’s from a heart attack. His son (my uncle) died in his 50’s from a massive ruptured aortic aneurysm (also had a couple heart attacks prior). Because of this, I have made a conscious effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise.
Sports were my passion, particularly basketball. Basketball was something I could play for hours and come home beat. Sore the next day but wanting more. Unfortunately in my mid-30’s (while my wife was pregnant with our first child) I tore the largest tendon in our body, the achilles. It was a complete rupture, but was repaired and I ultimately returned to basketball 2 years later. The leg felt great and I felt strong so I continued to play in a competitive men’s league. Basketball was my core exercise, because it was fun, engaging, and made me look forward to the next game.

My wife was now pregnant with our 2nd child, and I was on a team that was tops of the league. One of our last games before the playoffs, tragedy struck again…this time I had a complete tear of my patellar tendon (the 2nd largest tendon attaching the “kneecap” to the upper portion of the shin) on the SAME leg as the previous achilles injury. For those needing a visual, when you rupture your patellar tendon the patella (kneecap) recoils up the thigh about midway to the hip. And yes, it hurts…a lot.

This 2nd injury was the end of any more competitive basketball and put me in a bit of an exercise funk. I gained some weight, felt awful, my blood pressure elevated, and my mood slipped. However, not wanting to repeat my family history of heart disease, this sent me on a quest to find something that would provide a quality workout, be easy on my now healed, but somewhat disabled right leg, but be engaging and fun, and something I could look forward to.

I was already getting up to walk the dog, so I figured I could get up a bit earlier and fit both in. I have not looked back 2+ years later and 500+ rides!

On to a bit about my background (other than my hereditary propensity for cardiovascular disease.) Yes, I am TechDadCO, but I am a family physician (some credibility) and also have a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology (much more cred!). So I actually do know a bit more than the average consumer about health, medicine, and fitness.
Below is the reason why One Peloton is different, and why I think they have the secrete sauce figured out:
First a bit on exercise in general: The clear failure of all fitness equipment or exercise program is losing interest. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to maintaining a regular exercise program that is safe and effective. Ultimately, exercise fads die because too many of them claim they will do things quicker and with minimal effort. The reality for long term sustained exercise health, something has to be convenient, very engaging, affordable, at times exciting, and set up in a way that you see objective improvements over time.
Now, why the Peloton system solves these problems: Obviously this is home equipment so convenience is key. You still need the motivation to get ON the bike, but this is easily overcome once you start. The metrics provided on the bike create a personal record of all your rides (Apple users can sync up their Peloton Account to Apple Health as well or just keep tally in the robust Peloton Digital App), allowing even the most competitive to compete against themselves or the leaderboard. Yes there is a leaderboard for all classes, LIVE or recorded. You can even see a “LIVE” leaderboard for those who are taking the recorded class with you at the same time! Those who are not competitive can have those metrics wipe away and hidden off screen. But I like to see personal change and I like to be near the top of everything 🙂 The Peloton Bike was a perfect fit!
The Peloton Cycle (and entire One Peloton Ecosystem) are amazing. If my leg was not lame, I would buy the Peloton Tread in a heartbeat. Combine this with the variety of class types (cycling, running classes and outdoor, strength, yoga, meditation, stretching, bootcamp, walking, and cardio) and instructors (Alex is my favorite), and you have a stealth bike that can be used before the family awakes, get a solid workout without abusing your body, awesome music to rock out with on your Bluetooth headphones (you can even “heart” songs you like during a class and sync a growing Peloton playlist to your Apple Music or Spotify Account,) and remain healthy and fit. And for some like me, it could be saving your life, day by day, and class by class.
